Heat and flame resistant mat made out of ZETEX PLUS, same material used in Hot Gloves, heat resistant up to 1500 F.  Mats are 12 X 12" and were sold by MILL ROSE, the welding supply company.
Since I sell a lot of these to electronics people... You can use it as a solder mat--if your iron slips, you don't damage your work surface. When you unplug your iron, you can wrap the still warm iron in the mat and put back in your toolbox without burning anything. (soldering iron not included)
You could use it as a heat shield under the hood or as equipment cabinet liner where heat is a problem.
You can use as a flame/heat  blanket to guard the wall behind when sweating joints.

Buy an extra for the kitchen... you can put your hot pot on one of these without ruining the counter top. I do suggest you do your own tests so you will know best how to use them.
These really are cheaper by the dozen. My price is already low but you do save when you buy more and the shipping stays fairly reasonable.
